What's on my nightstand?

What's On Your Nightstand

Most of November was spent finishing up the Bible in 90 Days. I finished, in chronological order:
  • John
  • Matthew
  • Mark
  • Luke
  • Galatians
  • 1-2 Thessalonians
  • 1-2 Corinthians
  • Romans
  • Acts
  • Ephesians
  • Colossians
  • Philemon
  • Philippians
  • James
  • 1 Timothy
  • Titus
  • 2 Timothy
  • Hebrews
  • 2 Peter
  • 1-3 John
  • Jude
  • Revelation

All month long, I kept thinking I wasn't reading much outside of the Bible. But now, browsing through my Goodreads reviews, I realize that I finished way more than I thought. Links are to my full reviews.

Christian Fiction
  • The Rose of Winslow Street by Elizabeth Camden - 4 stars. Another great read by Camden. If she continues to publish great books, she'll make my short list of favorite authors.

Christian Nonfiction
  • Midnight in Aisle Seven: Sometimes God introduces Himself outside of church by Jay Lowder - 2 stars. I haven't finished the review yet but will this week.
  • A Big Life: Ordinary People Led by an Extraordinary God by Peter Hone - 4 stars. I am still working on the review for this book as well but I highly recommend it.

Classics
  • North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell - 4 stars. A thorougly satisfying classic with great themes.

General Nonfiction
  • Twisted Whiskers: Solving Your Cat's Behavior Problems by Pam Johnson - 3.5 stars.
  • Psycho Kitty? by Pam Johnson-Bennett - 4 stars. A fantastic cat book that helped us curb several behavioral issues in our four year old male.

Secular Fiction
Currently reading
  • The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. I was sure this was going to be a difficult book to read. It's taking me a long time to read but doesn't require nearly as much effort as I had expected.
  • Think Like a Cat: How to Raise a Well-Adjusted Cat--Not a Sour Puss by Pam Johnson-Bennett

Overall, it was a pretty good month. I can't wait to see what December brings!

My word --- just making it through the Bible in 90 days is a large amount of reading! I've done it in a year several times, and even that is quite an accomplishment (for me, at least -- those prophets get pretty brutal). I also read North and South in the past year -- really enjoyed it.

I agree with Susan--reading that much plus finishing the Bible? WOW!

I see North and South mentioned on a lot of blogs. Maybe I'll tackle it one day!

Good for you in finishing the Bible in 90 days! It takes me 2-3 YEARS to read through each time. ha. But better than not at all, right?

"A Big Life" sounds very intriguing. I definitely consider myself an ordinary person and God an extraordinary God. I'll write that one down.

Glad to hear that "The Brothers Karamazov" isn't as difficult to read as you expected. I want to read it one day, too, but have been intimidated by it.

Enjoy!

The cat books caught me off guard! HA on that psycho kitty book.

You're the second one I know to have finished reading North and South recently. (B from Dwell in Possibility being the other.) I haven't read that one yet, but would like to.

Yeah, I'd say you are getting plenty of reading done. Looking forward to hearing about A Big Life. Sounds intriguing!

Wow! What a month! I am working on plans for the next year. I am looking for one Christian NF, one or two Classics, and then Bible reading for each month. I may have to look up A Big Life and Midnight in Aisle Seven.

That is quite a bit of reading! I wish I could devote more time to my reading, I'm still averaging 2-3 books per month at best.

I used to read the Bible through in a year but now I go at my own pace so I can feel free to stop, think, look up cross references if I need to, etc. I'm not sure how long it takes me to get through now -- maybe a year and a half to two years. the epistles go by so fast and are packed full of so much that lately I've been rereading them several times before going on to the next one. It is nice sometimes to do broad overview reading to keep the big picture in mind but then to do more concentrated reading in shorter passages at other times. But either way is good -- we all need to be getting God's Word into our hearts and minds.

I loved North and South and will probably reread it in the future.

I'm glad to hear that about the Brothers Karamazov. I've considered starting that or another of Dostoyevsky but have been intimidated.

Wow! I read through the Bible in 90 days last Spring but didn't read nearly as many other books during that time as you!

I am going to have to check out Elizabeth Camden. I've seen her books but haven't read any. I'll have to put North and South on my TBR list. I've read Wives and Daughters and Cranford and really enjoyed them.

Congratulations on getting through your Bible in 90 days.
